50 years of company history

On the occasion of our 50th company anniversary we have written down our history. It is a story full of ups and downs, from the pioneering spirit of the sixties to the challenges of today.

Foundation

Gisela and Josef Rengers set up their own business with an innovative business idea: They produce plastic products for agriculture from the at that time new material polyester.

On 15 July 1964, the company "Rengers Kunststoffe" was registered in the commercial register.

Company location: Industriestraße 1 in Dalum, Emsland.

Gisela Rengers: "Self-employment has always been my husband's dream."

Plastic products for agriculture

The first products: Milk can rinsing tubs for cleaning milk cans, feed carts in various sizes and square ice water cooling basins for cooling milk cans.

The first production hall

The first production hall at Industriestraße 1 in Dalum has been built.

First swimming pools

The reduction of subsidies in agriculture has prompted the company to reorient itself.

Josef Rengers is searching for alternative applications for polyester and discovers a gap in the market: Swimming pools made of polyester, made of one piece. In 1970 he produces the first swimming pools. One of the first pools is used as a visual object in the garden of the Rengers family.

First advertising brochure

The first swimming pool installed in a private garden can be found in the advertising brochure of 1972.

Challenge: Transportation

The first special vehicle for the transport of swimming pools, called the small "DU", developed by the company Borco-Höhns from Rothenburg.

The basins are transported on edge. The trailers will have space for two basins. Larger basins are transported horizontally.

RivieraPool GmbH

Josef and Gisela Rengers seize the opportunity to expand their business and buy the insolvent sewing shop opposite at Industriestrasse 2.

This is where the headquarters of RivieraPool GmbH are established - the newly founded company is responsible for sales and marketing of all products manufactured by Rengers Plastics. The first in-house exhibition for swimming pool accessories grows.

United Arab Emirates

In the face of the 1973 oil crisis, Gisela and Josef Rengers look for new business opportunities outside Germany.

In the United Arab Emirates they rent a plot of land in the middle of desert sand - without electricity, water or road connection. Within a few years, they built a flourishing company there, producing swimming pools, water tanks and sunshades for the Persian Gulf countries.

Import of whirlpools

Josef Rengers is sure: "What is trending in America will come to Europe sooner or later." On his trips to America he discovers the booming demand for whirlpools. In 1976 he imports the first pools in improved acrylic glass quality from the American manufacturer Bernie Burba. He thus made a decisive contribution to making the whirlpool socially acceptable in Germany.

First swimming pool with stairs

Successful product development: RivieraPool launches the first swimming pool with access stairs.

Whirlpool production

Josef Rengers starts his own production of whirlpools under licence from Baja Industries. His son Peter Rengers had previously familiarised himself with thermoforming technology in America. Under his direction, the first thermoforming machine is built in Dalum.

Saying goodbye to Sharjah

By the end of the seven-year production license, RivieraPool had become a flourishing business in Sharjah.

Rengers sold the company and invested the profits in the Dalum production site.

The Eighties: Bathing Fun and Fitness

A supplement in the trade magazine "Schwimmbad und Sauna" (Swimming Pool and Sauna) shows the advantages of RivieraPool whirlpools and swimming pools: With 80 massage jets, the whirlpools ensure fitness and a good mood after stress and strain. Due to the sandwich construction, the swimming pools are thermally insulated and particularly energy-saving.

Expansion of whirlpool production

The demand for whirlpools is rising. Whirlpool production is being expanded. Head of Marketing Uwe-Jens Witt testing lying in the pool.

Hygiene tests in the whirlpool studio

In cooperation with the Gelsenkirchen Hygiene Institute, the company is installing a whirlpool studio for hygiene examinations in its own premises.

The hygiene tests provide important findings for the manufacturing of whirlpools and water treatment.

Further development of logistics

The larger the swimming pools become, the more challenging the transport to the construction site.

Since the 1980s, helicopters and special cranes have been used to transport basins into inaccessible gardens.

25th company anniversary

Gisela and Josef Rengers have reason to celebrate: They had turned a 5-man business into a flourishing medium-sized family business with about 60 employees.

RivieraPool was one of the market leaders in its sector in 1989. The order books are full, and basins are ready for dispatch.

Generational change

The second Rengers generation takes charge. Rengers Kunststoffe GmbH changes its name to Rengers Kunststoffverarbeitungs GmbH & Co. KG, whose managing director is Peter Rengers. Guido Rengers becomes managing director of RivieraPool GmbH in 1994, Uwe Rengers heads the marketing department, Heike Rengers takes over as assistant managing director. Together they continually develop products and marketing concepts: The swimming pools of the nineties are systematic swimming pools that allow individual planning with a variety of equipment variants.

Production site: Slovakia

With the opening of Eastern European markets, Josef Rengers establishes a production site in the Slovakian city of Trnava. 

Today Reku Slovakia has approximately the same capacity as the Dalum plant and produces for Eastern and Western European markets.

Individual in form, function and colour

The production of series pools is the core area of RivieraPool. Due to growing market demand, RivieraPool also begins to offer customized free-form pools.

2000-2005
2000-2005

Interim storage Rossau

In the year 2000, Josef and Gisela Rengers built an interim storage facility in Rossau near Dresden, which became a logistics hub for East-West business. The elimination of double customs clearance eliminates the need for an interim storage facility, which is sold in 2005.

Unique in Europe: the new exhibition centre

RivieraPool is building a new exhibition centre for swimming pools and whirlpools directly on the A31. Today the exhibition centre is unique in Europe in its size and variety: it shows a world of water, light and colour.

Major fire in production

The company owners and employees are lucky in misfortune when a cable fire burns down parts of the production hall at Industriestraße 1 in Dalum down to the outer walls.

Thanks to the support of all employees, the company is able to avoid production stoppages. After 8 months, in December 2010, the newly built production hall can be put into operation.

Exhibition Rheinau-Linx

Due to the increasing demand for demonstration objects and on-site consultation, RivieraPool is increasingly focusing on decentralised exhibition areas throughout Germany. The "Poolsplace" in Rheinau-Linx opens in 2012: "Regional proximity to the customer is indispensable for us. The decision in favour of a pool is preceded by intensive and personal consultation, combined with an illustration using real swimming pools," says Uwe Rengers.

Trade Fair Aquanale

Every two years RivieraPool presents the latest designs and techniques for swimming pools and whirlpools at the Aquanale international trade fair in Cologne. In 2014 RivieraPool presents the WetLounge - a new shallow water zone concept.

Record pool in anniversary year

20 meters long and weighing 8.5 tons - the largest one-piece swimming pool in the company's history so far.

For three days and three nights, the basin is transported to its destination by special transport: to a private estate in the province of Salzburg.

"We have succeeded in implementing all the customer's individual wishes." Project Manager Matthias Rosemeyer.

Exhibition Centre Neuötting

The new RivieraPool exhibition centre in Neuötting, Bavaria, opens its doors in October 2014: The joint exhibition of RivieraPool and landscape gardener Grün+Stein combines stylish pool facilities with picturesque garden landscapes.

One company - three generations

The Rengers Group is a medium-sized family business par excellence: Three generations of the Rengers family are active in the company today, half a century after the company was founded.
